The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) communicated that an error occurred in the budget assigned to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in the 2025 Expenditure Budget Project. It was pointed out that the cut of 5 billion pesos was a regrettable mistake and a 3.5% increase for the upcoming year was assured.
"Due to a regrettable error, the budgets of UNAM and the National Polytechnic Institute were reduced in the Federal Expenditure Budget that was delivered today to the Congress of the Union," mentioned the agency in a statement on the night of November 15.
The SHCP has stated that the Budget Commission of the Chamber of Deputies will oversee that both UNAM and IPN receive a 3.5% increase compared to the resources from the previous year. UNAM and IPN were informed about this correction.
UNAM expressed its concern regarding the reduction of its resources after the presentation of the 2025 Expenditure Budget, as this could affect scholarships intended for low-income students.
