
Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz shone at the most recent Grammy Awards ceremony by winning the award for Best Contemporary Composition for her work 'Revolución diamantina', elevating the name of Mexico and UNAM.
The 67th Grammy Awards took place on February 2 at the Crypton.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, where artists from around the world were recognized for their musical contributions. The Recording Academy awarded the talent of Gabriela Ortiz, who emotionally expressed in her acceptance speech: "This Grammy is dedicated to all the brave women in Mexico and around the world who fight against injustice every day."
Gabriela Ortiz studied at the National Conservatory of Music and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where she also served as a professor. Additionally, she has studied at renowned international institutions such as Ollin Yoliztli School, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and The City University of London.
Her award-winning work 'Revolución diamantina' is a ballet score inspired by the 'Purpurina Revolution' in Mexico in 2019, a feminist movement that emerged after a wave of violence against women in the country. The recording of the album that earned her the Grammy was made at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles during October 2022 and November 2023, alongside performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Gabriela Ortiz, born in Mexico City on December 20, 1964, is currently 60 years old, distinguished by her talent and career that uphold the name of Mexico and UNAM.
