Last Body of Trapped Miner Found in Coahuila

The Government of Mexico has announced the discovery of the remains of the tenth and last miner who was trapped in the coal mine 'El Pinabete', in Coahuila, since last August. The finding comes 918 days after the collapse that left 10 miners trapped, initiating rescue operations.

Mexican authorities reported that the skeletal remains were spotted this morning in the 'GSN6 Norte' gallery of the coal mine. A shoe containing skeletal remains has been identified, so the necessary work will be carried out to ensure the safety conditions established in the Protocol for the Recovery of Biological Findings.

The rescue efforts were conducted by the National Coordination of Civil Protection, the Federal Electricity Commission, the Ministry of National Defense, the Attorney General's Office of the State of Coahuila de Zaragoza, and search teams. The search and recovery of the remains will continue at the intersection of the GSN6 Norte gallery and vertical shaft No.2.

Regarding the first bodies of miners found, they were discovered on December 28, 2023, more than 500 days after the accident, when the mine was flooded following a collapse of the adjacent abandoned mine called 'Conchas Norte'.

In this regard, after the collapse, former President López Obrador pledged to recover the bodies in the following months, but later predicted that the process would extend into 2024. This incident has sparked controversy in Mexico about the actions of mining companies in the coal region, where there have been more than 100 deaths of people dedicated to mining, according to the Pasta de Conchos Family, which brings together relatives of those who died in the namesake mine.
