El Nacional Monte de Piedad commemorates its 250th anniversary with an exhibition that brings together prominent artists and celebrates the rich history and philanthropic mission of the institution. Since its founding on February 25, 1775, El Nacional Monte de Piedad has had a clear mission: to help those in need.
During the commemorative event, executives of the institution were present, including Pedro Romero de Terreros, Rafael Humberto del Río Aguirre, and David Coto, who contributed to the celebration of this significant occasion. This exhibition featured the sound installation by Tania Candiani, titled "Prosperity and Abundance," and the mural "Mexicans Helping Mexicans" by Erick Tzucumo, which connects the past, present, and future through the evocation of Mayan, Nahua, and Mixtec codices.
The organizers acknowledged that one of the main challenges is balancing the philanthropic mission of El Nacional Monte de Piedad with the artistic vision of the creators. During the inauguration, the commemorative exhibition was presented, which includes pieces crafted from the intervention of pledged objects over the years at the Monte de Piedad. This collaboration seeks to celebrate the history of the institution and promote a more just and supportive future.
The event underscored the importance of alliances between cultural and public institutions to strengthen the impact of art on society. During the celebration, the creation of a commemorative mural for the institution's 250th anniversary was launched, titled "Mutual Presence of Eternal Times," led by the renowned artist Arnaldo Cohen, 84 years old. Among the highlighted works are different creations by artists such as Betsabé Romero, Marcos Rountree, Cisco Jiménez, and others.
At the closing of the event, it was reiterated that art not only helps to remember history but also allows for imagining a better future. "The responsibility to continue helping Mexicans is our mission," concluded one of the participants. Through pawn loans, El Nacional Monte de Piedad has transformed the lives of millions of Mexicans and has supported over 550 civil society organizations in areas such as health, food security, and decent work.
