Oscar Awards 2023: ‘Anora’ shines and ‘Emilia Pérez’ takes home two statues

The actress 'Emilia Pérez' arrived at the Oscar gala leading the nominations with a total of 13, but only took home two awards: Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Song for 'El Mal.' The big winner of the night was 'Anora,' which won five out of the six awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture.

In a message, actress Karla Sofía Gascón thanked the Academy members for her nomination for Best Actress and congratulated the winners of the edition, especially her co-star Zoe Saldaña and the composers of 'El Mal.' Gascón attended the ceremony without stepping on the red carpet, in one of her first appearances after the controversial messages on X that led her to step away from the awards season for 'Emilia Pérez.'

"It has been intense," Gascón commented to the press about her experience at the Oscars. The actress, who started the awards season as a favorite for the award for 'Emilia Pérez,' ended the night without taking home the statuette. The controversy over the xenophobic and racist messages was one of the main topics surrounding her and the film.

During the gala, Gascón was sought after by the press and referred to the Oscar host, Conan O’Brien, as Jimmy Kimmel in response to a joke made by the comedian during the ceremony. After weeks of silence regarding the old messages, Gascón praised the gala and the host, highlighting the pleasant and fun evening.
