The play "We Were Going to Change the World" is running from late April until June 8 at the Santa Catarina Theatre, located near Coyoacán. Performances are on Thursdays and Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 7 PM, and Sundays at 6 PM, except on May 1, 10, and 15.
The play, written by José Emilio Hernández, directed by David Jiménez Sánchez, and starring Luis Eduardo Yee, immerses us in a story that blends science fiction, nostalgia, and conspiracy theories in a Latin American style. Through seven intertwined moments, from a couple's fight to the death of Jorge Ibargüengoitia, the narrative moves through memory, art, and catastrophe.
The set design uses repurposed objects, and the soundtrack combines cumbia, reggaeton, and corridos tumbados, creating a unique atmosphere. The play invites us to reflect on what we would do if we had more time.
"Born in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown, 'We Were Going to Change the World' is also a testament to a dialogue between its creators who used science fiction as an imaginative bridge when everything was falling apart out there," highlights its production team. The piece carries a message about the possibility of altering a past event to stop the end of the world, posing a universal question about the chance to change a lost love or a painful mistake if one could go back in time, without reaching the extremes of the killer robots from Terminator.
