Lion Dam: New Name for the New Dam

After a citizen participation process, the name "Presa León" was chosen as the winner for the new dam in Nuevo León. Juan Ignacio Barragán, General Director of Water and Drainage of Monterrey, announced this decision during a live broadcast.

During the call period, which was held from March 23 to April 24, 2025, a total of 1,629 proposals were received to name the dam. The committee responsible for selecting the winning name met last Wednesday, April 30, and chose "Presa León." This proposal had the support of 26 people.

The submitted proposals were evaluated according to criteria previously published by Water and Drainage, which included the need for the name to be short, easy to pronounce and remember, original and creative, without offensive connotations, and in line with the identity of Nuevo León.

To participate in the call, it was required to be of legal age, reside in the state, and submit only one proposal. It was also emphasized that those serving as public officials were excluded from participation.

The Government of Nuevo León, through Water and Drainage Services of Monterrey, revealed the winning name as a result of the call "La Libertad es tuya, ponle nombre a la Presa." This dam, which has the capacity to store up to 220 million cubic meters of water, is part of the Master Plan to Guarantee Water in Nuevo León until 2050.

Finally, Barragán thanked all participants and announced that the winners will receive their prizes starting Monday, May 5, after being contacted via email by Water and Drainage Services of Monterrey.
