Mexico's President Congratulates New Miss Universe

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum praised Fátima Bosch's victory, highlighting her courage in defending women's rights after an incident during the competition.

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, congratulated Fátima Bosch, Miss Universe winner representing the country, on Friday, stating that “she is an example of courage for all Mexicans and for women”.

“She is an example that when there is an injustice, and particularly for women, one must raise their voice,” the head of state indicated during her daily morning conference.

Regarding her victory, Sheinbaum said that she “liked that she raises her voice,” referring to the confrontation the winner had with Itsaragrisil, in which, after the director's verbal attack, Bosch left the room accompanied by other contestants in a gesture of protest.

“We, women, look more beautiful when we speak and when we participate.”

The 25-year-old Tabasco native Bosch became the fourth Mexican to win the award, after Lupita Jones won it in 1991, Ximena Navarrete in 2010, and Andrea Meza in 2020.

Sheinbaum emphasized that “that thing they used to say, ‘you look prettier when you are quiet,’ is already in the past. And she raises her voice and says: ‘there is an injustice, I don't agree with it’,” she added.

Bosch surpassed the Thai contestant Veena Praveenar and the Venezuelan Stephany Abasaly, who finished in third place in a contest that featured women from 120 countries and territories, including nine mothers, one transgender woman, a genocide survivor, and the first-ever representative of Palestine in the competition's history.

Bosch, from the state of Tabasco (east), won the award held in Thailand following the controversy in which Nawat Itsaragrisil, director of Miss Universe Thailand, told her to be quiet during one of the pre-final sessions for not posting content about the event on her social networks.
