Train Derailment in Mexico Injures 20

The number of injured in the derailment of the Transístmico train, part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor (CIIT), has increased to 20, Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) reported on Sunday. The CIIT is a megaproject connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via trains, ports, and industrial hubs. Semar stated that 20 people have been injured and are being transported to local hospitals for medical care. Five land ambulances, one air ambulance, and about 40 naval health agents are deployed. Other agents are conducting rescue operations in coordination with authorities to assist those who fell into a seven-meter-high embankment. The Attorney General of the Republic, Ernestina Godoy, announced that her office has launched an investigation into the causes of the accident. Agents from the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) are coordinating with federal and state authorities. Earlier, Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara reported 15 injured individuals who were immediately treated and taken for medical evaluation. President Claudia Sheinbaum said authorities are monitoring the situation to support the corridor's users. The CIIT aims to boost international trade by linking Asia with the U.S. East Coast and Europe, competing with the Panama Canal.
