Mexican actor Rafael Amaya announced on Monday through his social networks that he will be the lead actor and producer of a new series about Mexican drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán. The series will be told from the perspective of his wife, Emma Coronel, and depict the life she had with the capo, who is currently detained in the United States.
In his post, Amaya references an exclusive by Deadline, which specified that the actor, known for the series 'El Señor de los Cielos,' will be one of the executive producers of the project, alongside Coronel and Maritza Ramos under the Amaya Productions banner. The production team also includes Zero Gravity Management, the company behind titles such as the series 'Ozark,' which narrates the links between organized crime in Mexico and the United States, starring Jason Bateman as Marty Byrde.
The creative team is currently searching for a screenwriter to write the script for the yet-to-be-titled production. Although it is known that the series will be a criminal drama with fictional elements covering themes such as power, loyalty, and survival through Coronel's experiences with Guzmán, who was considered one of the world's most powerful capos alongside Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho,' who was killed by Mexican authorities on Sunday.
According to the producers, Guzmán will not participate in the series; however, Coronel highlighted that her husband has followed Amaya's work after he portrayed Aurelio Casillas in ten seasons of 'El Señor de los Cielos.' In addition to being an executive producer, Coronel will play an active role in the series' casting, particularly for the character that will portray her story.
Emma Coronel is known for being 'El Chapo's' third wife and for having served a three-year sentence in the United States on various drug-related charges until September 2023. With an age difference of 32 years between them, Coronel and the Mexican capo met in 2006 during a local festival in her hometown of Canelas (Durango, Mexico), where she was crowned as a beauty queen. Coronel's father, Nacho Coronel, was one of the Mexican capo's main partners until his death in 2010.
The figure of Guzmán has fueled the popularity of narco-series worldwide, as his criminal activity has been portrayed on screen in other titles such as 'El Chapo,' starring Marco de la O, and 'Narcos: Mexico,' featuring Alejandro Edda.
