National Civil Protection Drill in Mexico

The Government of Mexico has announced the National Civil Protection Drill. The objective of the drill is for the population to act in an orderly manner during a real emergency.

During the exercise, Civil Protection recommends following a series of basic actions to ensure a safe evacuation and reduce risks. It is essential to remain calm, follow official instructions, and suspend activities in an orderly fashion. People should head to safe zones or evacuation routes without running, pushing, or shouting. It is also important to stay away from objects that could fall and not to use elevators. Finally, proceed to the designated assembly point.

This drill is part of the 40th anniversary of the National Civil Protection System, established after the 1985 earthquakes. Its purpose is to strengthen prevention strategies, improve emergency response capabilities, and promote the active participation of the population in these exercises.

The first National Drill 2026 will take place on May 6th at 11:00 a.m. It will involve the participation of authorities, institutions, and the general public to reinforce the response capacity to an earthquake and improve organization in risk situations.

The drill will simulate an 8.2 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter off the coast of Guerrero. The alert will sound in several states, including Mexico City, State of Mexico, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, Morelos, Michoacán, and Colima. Additionally, a test message reading "THIS IS A DRILL" will be sent to mobile phones.
