The San Ángel neighborhood has witnessed a unique tradition for 14 consecutive years, where each cultural venue presents a tribute that combines art, history, and tradition. This year, the altars not only honor the faithful departed but also celebrate the lives of personalities such as Mexican artists María Félix and Jorge Negrete, José Zorrilla, the Heroic Battalion of San Patricio, Alvar Carrillo Gil, Frida Kahlo, Isidro Fabela, among others.
Among the attractions to enjoy in San Ángel are various cultural spaces such as the El Carmen Museum, Casa del Risco, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo Studio House, Carrillo Gil Art Museum, Soumaya Museum Plaza Loreto, and the Cultural Center. These venues have joined a program of activities that highlight the historical and cultural richness of San Ángel.
Josefina Mac Gregor, president of the Union of Colonists of San Ángel, San Ángel Inn, and Tlacopac, pointed out that San Ángel is an area of historical monuments and tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Mexico City that preserves and promotes traditions. Each year, the El Carmen Museum sets up its traditional Day of the Dead Altar dedicated to a character linked to San Ángel, offering a variety of activities such as family workshops, literary calaveritas contests, and cultural tours.
The festival runs from October 24 to November 10, and the general public is invited to join this magical atmosphere where art and memory merge to celebrate the history of Mexico. This year, the event has been enriched by the collaboration of museums and cultural centers seeking to promote culture and history through this unique tribute.
On the occasion of the Day of the Dead festivities, San Ángel is filled with vibrant colors and characteristic scents, recalling one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Mexico. Each altar in San Ángel is a portal to memory, a space to pay tribute to those who came before us. The inauguration of the altar dedicated to María Félix 'La Doña' is one of the highlights of this year, remembering her cultural importance in the neighborhood and challenging the beauty standards of her time.
