Nowadays, the Day of the Dead in Mexico has also become a special time to honor pets that have passed away. Instead of being a sad celebration, it is a beautiful way to celebrate them and keep their memory alive. The Humane Society International (HSI) Mexico has created a special altar that aims not only to honor pets but also to raise awareness about animal protection and welfare in the country.
The altar takes place at the Casa Fuerte del Indio Fernández, located at Ignacio Zaragoza 51, Santa Catarina neighborhood, Coyoacán municipality. This iconic place is the perfect setting for this celebration, where history, culture, and love for animals intertwine in a touching commemoration of life and death. Visitors have the opportunity to include the names of their pets on this beautiful altar, celebrating the love and memories shared with these valuable family members.
The general admission to visit the altar is $150, with a reduced cost of $50 for people with INAPAM credentials. Visitors can not only pay tribute to their deceased companions but also reflect on the fundamental role they play in our lives. The altar is located in one of the house’s stables, adorned with an impressive mural by Diego Rivera as the centerpiece.
This year, HSI Mexico has decided to expand this celebration to include companion animals, those faithful friends who enrich our lives. The altar will be available from October 18 to November 17, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, offering visitors a unique opportunity to remember those furry beings who left an indelible mark on their hearts.
Pamela Reséndiz, Food and Nutrition Manager of HSI Mexico, expressed the meaning of this altar: "It is an opportunity to think of all your loved ones who have passed away. The Day of the Dead is one of the most cherished traditions in Mexico, a celebration that pays tribute to those loved ones who are no longer living with us, remembering the things they enjoyed and all the love and joy they brought us."
