Day of the Dead: Classes and Celebrations in Yucatán

According to the 2024-2025 School Calendar of the Secretary of Public Education (SEP), there will be classes in all basic education schools, including preschool, primary, and secondary, on Friday, November 1, All Saints' Day. Meanwhile, the Day of the Dead festivities will take place on November 1 and 2 throughout Mexico, coinciding with Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Although most schools in the country will have classes on Friday, November 1, this will not hinder the celebration of the Day of the Dead. Classrooms often organize various activities, such as altars and gatherings, where students dress up as iconic characters of the celebration, such as catrinas, catrines, La Llorona, or characters from current horror movies.

It is important to remember that there will be no classes on Saturday, November 2, as it falls on the weekend. However, the state of Yucatán has decided to modify the rules for this year. The Education Secretariat of the Government of Yucatán announced that all school activities at all educational levels will be suspended on November 1 to preserve and promote the traditions of the Day of the Dead.

In summary, most states will follow the SEP calendar and have classes on November 1, while in Yucatán, school activities will be suspended to commemorate this significant festival for Mexican culture.
