In Milpa Alta, the 'Eternal and Unforgettable Love' Day of the Dead Festival will take place from October 31 to November 9 as part of the Day of the Dead celebrations. Artistic and cultural activities will kick off with the Body Paint competition and the Mega Monumental Offering 'Villages with Memory' at the Villa Milpa Alta esplanade. The intention is to preserve the traditions and artistic expressions of the people of Milpa Alta during this autumn season.
The mayor of Milpa Alta, Octavio Rivero, stated that the festival aims to honor the faithful departed as ancestors did, with historic cemeteries in the area that neighbors visit every Day of the Dead. Rivero emphasized: 'Today, we the people of Milpa Alta reaffirm and maintain our history, traditions, customs, and culture as indigenous peoples of Milpa Alta.'
To honor the ancestors, there will be a Parade of Floats from San Bartolomé Xicomulco to San Antonio Tecómitl and a Festival of Balloons and Chinese Paper Lanterns in San Agustín Ohtenco. There will be theater performances and the 'Muerteada' in Santa Ana Tlacotenco, as well as the staging of 'The Curse of La Llorona' in San Salvador Cuauhtenco.
One of the most notable activities will be the concert by Luis Ángel Jaramillo, the voice of Miguel in the movie 'Coco', with mariachi in San Antonio Tecómitl. The movie has marked the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico due to its story about Miguel and his quest for his musician great-great-grandfather in the land of the dead.
The 'Tomb Contest' in San Antonio Tecómitl is a tradition where families decorate the graves with mud sculptures related to the festival. Rivero highlighted the creativity of the families in this contest: 'In addition to decorating their graves with marigold flowers and candles, they create works of art with mud, figures made of mud that are true works of art.'
Additionally, a parade will be announced with the participation of senior citizens from the communities of Milpa Alta dressed for the occasion. Security measures will be implemented in the area, and routes have been organized to facilitate accessibility to the festival. Elements of the Citizen Security Secretariat will patrol public squares and cemeteries to ensure the safety of attendees.
