A patrol belonging to the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) caught fire and exploded on the streets of Tepito, specifically on Tenochtitlán Street. Neighbors and passersby rushed to the scene to witness and record the events. While some witnesses claimed that the fire was caused by third parties, SSC agents stated that it was due to a short circuit in the unit.
The SSC of Mexico City denied rumors that the patrol was intentionally set on fire. According to the security institution, the smoke that emerged from the hood of the patrol was due to a mechanical failure, thus dismissing a possible attack against the police officers. The involved officers provided their testimony to the Public Ministry to clarify what happened.
Once the officer in charge of the patrol requested help and abandoned the vehicle, it suddenly caught fire. Despite efforts to extinguish the flames with fire extinguishers, the police officers were unable to control the fire, prompting the Firefighters to intervene to put it out and clear the road.
The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, October 30, 2024, in the Morelos neighborhood. The police unit was engulfed in flames suddenly and subsequently exploded. The SSC issued a statement detailing that the situation was triggered when the female police officer in charge of the patrol alerted her colleagues after noticing the fire in the vehicle.
