"I take this opportunity to say that, honorarily, with a small support, I decided to appoint Gabriela Cuevas to be the representative, before various institutions, along with the Secretariat of Tourism, to address the issue of the 2026 World Cup," mentioned the head of the Executive in her morning conference at the National Palace.
Gabriela Cuevas Barrón is a 45-year-old politician born in Mexico City on April 3, 1979. She was a spokesperson in Claudia Sheinbaum's presidential campaign and a Deputy in the Congress of the Union of Mexico during the 2018-2021 period. On her social media, Gabriela has shown her fandom for sports, sharing images from important events such as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Mexican Grand Prix, and NFL games.
Gabriela Cuevas will be the representative of Mexico to FIFA and will be responsible for coordinating the necessary efforts to ensure that the sporting event takes place smoothly in the three host cities: Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Mexico City. "The 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the three countries of North America, will have its opening match in our homeland. I appreciate the trust of our president Claudia Sheinbaum for the appointment as a representative to the institutions involved in organizing the most important sporting event in the world," Cuevas wrote on social media after her appointment.
The tournament will start on June 11, 2026. The Mexican National Team will feature in the opening match at the Azteca Stadium, which will host a total of five matches. The Akron Stadium and BBVA Stadium will have four matches each. Activities related to the 2026 World Cup will not only focus on the stadiums in Mexico but also in towns, neighborhoods, and colonies, which is expected to bring well-being to the entire Republic.
