The December holidays and New Year are approaching following the completion of the Good End bridge and the commemoration of the Mexican Revolution. During these festive days, the monarch butterfly sanctuaries present an excellent travel option or weekend getaway.
Since Friday, November 15, the three monarch butterfly sanctuaries in Michoacán have opened their doors to welcome visitors. An influx of more than half a million people, both domestic and foreign, is expected. The El Rosario, Sierra Chincua, and Senguio sanctuaries offer the opportunity to witness the arrival of millions of monarch butterflies that will settle in the oyamel forests of eastern Michoacán over the next five months.
Visiting hours, from 9 AM to 5 PM every day of the week, have been established by state authorities. It is important for visitors to respect the environment of the monarch butterflies by avoiding touching them, smoking, making noise, or bringing pets. This natural phenomenon is an important symbol for the state of Michoacán on a global level.
In the State of Mexico, the first sightings of monarch butterflies over oyamel and pine forests in the municipalities of Temascaltepec and Valle de Bravo have begun. These butterflies have traveled more than 4,200 kilometers from Canada, crossing the United States to reach Mexico. Numerous butterflies have been observed in the southern region of Edomex, especially along the Toluca-Valle de Bravo and Temascaltepec highways.
The monarch butterfly is considered at risk according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, due to factors such as the spraying of the 'milkweed' plant, its food source, in farmland in the United States, and illegal logging in its habitat in various municipalities of Mexico.
The Government of the State of Mexico and organizations like the World Wildlife Fund have implemented measures to protect monarch butterflies, such as creating pollinator gardens and raising awareness about the importance of conserving this species, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The monarch butterfly, like bees, plays a crucial role in pollination and in maintaining ecological balance.
The arrival of monarch butterflies is a unique natural phenomenon in the world, which can be observed in various municipalities of Michoacán and the State of Mexico. These fragile creatures travel thousands of kilometers to reach their hibernation and reproduction sanctuaries, facing various risks along their journey. Their preservation is essential for maintaining biodiversity and the balance of ecosystems.
