From January to June 2024, there were 15,243 homicides recorded in Mexico, according to preliminary figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Authorities and civil organizations have emphasized the need to strengthen public security strategies to reduce these figures and ensure the protection of citizens.
The main method used to commit these crimes was firearm shots, accounting for 73% of the cases, followed by sharp weapons, at 9.1%. Aggressions by unspecified means totaled 1,412, which complicates the identification of the method used by the aggressor.
During this period, the national homicide rate was 11.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, showing a slight decrease compared to the same period in 2023, when a rate of 12.4 per 100,000 inhabitants was reported.
Regarding homicides by gender, for men, the rate was 21.2 per 100,000 inhabitants, representing a reduction of 1.1 points compared to 2023. For women, the rate was 2.6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, highlighting the persistence of gender violence in the country.
Despite the overall decrease in homicides, experts point out that violence remains a structural problem in Mexico, emphasizing that the use of firearms continues to be the main mechanism of aggression.
