Stay Alert! Campaign to Protect Animals in the Cold

The Environment Secretary of Nuevo León has launched the campaign "Stay Alert!" aimed at ensuring proper shelter to protect companion animals from extreme cold. With the arrival of a warm wave on January 20, 2025, pet owners are urged to ensure their pets have a warm and safe place to shelter from low temperatures.

According to the state agency, animal abuse is considered a serious offense, and cases of cruelty or abuse can be reported to the phone number 81 2033 2124 or via email at proteccion.animal@nuevoleon.gob.mx. In Nuevo León, penalties for animal abuse include fines and imprisonment, which vary depending on the type of abuse inflicted on the animals.

Fines range from 3 to 5 times the minimum wage for causing injuries, to 100 to 250 times if the animal is killed. For imprisonment, sentences range from 3 days to two years, also depending on the seriousness of the situation. Other sanctions may include disqualification from holding certain positions, psychological treatment for up to 180 days, or community service for the same period.

Authorities can partially or fully substitute penalties with psychological treatment or community service. It is emphasized that animal abuse is considered a serious crime in Nuevo León, and the legal consequences are increasing. In light of the cold wave affecting the region, which is expected to peak with temperatures below three degrees, it is vital to provide adequate shelter for pets to protect them from harsh weather conditions. Did you know that by law your companion animals must have a safe place to protect themselves from the weather?
