In our early years of life, we experience a strong sense of belonging to our family, our clan. From the moment we are born, we recognize our parents, siblings, grandparents, and feel protected and safe in their company. We are part of a lineage, where we inherit surnames, customs, education, and norms that are part of our identity from a young age.
During childhood, we absorb the emotions and values of our family like a sponge, without questioning them, as they represent our safety and survival in the world. However, as we grow, we begin to individualize, to separate from the clan in order to discover our own identity and inner strength.
In adolescence, this need for individualization becomes more evident, and we feel compelled to question and break away from the patterns established by our family and society. We experience the sensation of merging with others, belonging to diverse tribes, seeking our identity through social groups or activities that define us.
Many times, we have experienced the feeling of losing our identity in others, of diluting ourselves in their emotions and needs. This fusion can provide us with a temporary sense of protection and security, but we also need to learn to assert ourselves in our own identity, to make our own decisions and to face the risk of making mistakes on the path to the freedom of choice.
At C7 Mental Health, we understand the importance of exploring these experiences and sensations, of understanding how they influence our identity and emotional well-being. We are here to listen to you, to accompany you in this process of self-knowledge and personal growth.
