Controversy at UNAM over Employee-Altercation Video

During the 2024-2025 school year, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) offered 31,000 spots across its 14 high school campuses; however, it ultimately enrolled more than 33,000 students, according to rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas. In 2022, the institution had 257,681 enrolled students, of which 47.9% were men and 52.1% women, according to official data from the Mexican government.

UNAM is one of the most important educational institutions in Mexico. Despite the large number of students, there are measures in place to prevent conflicts within the facilities. Recently, a video went viral on social media showing an alleged employee arguing with a student, even supposedly threatening him for being a man.

In the 12-second recording, the woman can be heard making comments such as "You're studying and you have nothing," "Look at those ugly shoes," and "I’m going to report you right now." Although the full context of the discussion is not available, online users expressed surprise at the threats directed at the student due to his gender.

In particular, the employee warned the student: "You do something to me and you won't get away with it outside, remember you're a man." This incident has generated comparisons to other cases like LadyUber on social media, and internet users have nicknamed the employee LadyUNAM.

In light of the controversy, the online community has called on the authorities for a detailed follow-up on the events to prevent similar situations from recurring in the future, and they have urged students to respect the internal rules and regulations of the university campuses.
