Historic Agreement to Improve Drug Supply

Cofepris and IMPI sign an agreement to optimize sanitary registrations in Mexico, improving access to medications and ensuring transparency in the health sector.

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) and the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening the process of sanitary registrations and improving the supply of medications in Mexico.

The agreement, which has been highlighted by Armida Zúñiga Estrada, head of Cofepris, as a historic milestone, seeks to expedite the processing of sanitary registration applications, providing legal certainty to the health sector. According to Zúñiga Estrada, this collaboration will allow for more efficient assessment of sanitary registration requests, reducing waiting times and facilitating the timely delivery of health supplies to the population.

In the words of Santiago Nieto Castillo, general director of IMPI, the pharmaceutical industry plays a crucial role in public health, where patents are an important mechanism of protection. The agreement not only involves an exchange of information between both institutions, but will also promote research and improve transparency in the sanitary registration process, respecting industrial property rights.

During the signing of the agreement, David Kershenobich, Secretary of Health, emphasized the importance of this collaboration for the development of the sector and for fulfilling the commitments established in the Mexico, United States, and Canada Agreement (T-MEC), as well as in the Mexico Plan. Kershenobich stressed that transparency is fundamental and mentioned the importance of the Patent List as a tool to know the existing patents that could influence the registration of new treatments.

In summary, this agreement between Cofepris and IMPI represents a significant advancement that will boost the supply of medications in Mexico and improve transparency in the sanitary registration process, benefiting the population and strengthening the health sector in the country.
