Understanding Demidorexia: The Fear of Aging

The fear of aging, represented by Demi Moore in the movie "The Substance," is known as midorexia and reflects the difficulty that some people experience in accepting the passage of time. This disorder manifests through attitudes and thoughts related to age, primarily in individuals between 40 and 50 years old. Although there are no specific symptoms to identify midorexia, experts agree on the importance of customizing treatments for this disorder.

"The fear of aging and its implications, such as thoughts about grief and death, are key aspects to consider," explained María Santos Becerril from the Faculty of Psychology at UNAM. Some warning signs of midorexia include dedicating a significant amount of time to exercising, maintaining a healthy diet, and constantly seeking younger partners, despite the responsibilities that come with age.

People experiencing midorexia often resort to extreme measures, such as wearing youthful clothing, seeking cosmetic surgeries, and anti-aging treatments to maintain a young appearance. Surgeries that have been undergone by celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Madonna, Demi Moore, and Donatella Versace are sought as references for those wishing to rejuvenate their appearance.

Doctor Marcos Sánchez from Kiharu Clinics mentions that many patients seek treatments that help improve their appearance without obvious intervention. Avoiding the so-called 'pillow face', an unnatural effect caused by the overuse of facial fillers, especially in areas like the cheeks, is one of the concerns in these treatments. To avoid falling into this phenomenon, it is crucial to clearly define the patient's goals, considering factors like age, skin type, and lifestyle.
