Guanajuato Launches New Violence Prevention Strategy

Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo presented a strategy for the prevention of violence and crime at the first session of the Intersecretarial Commission dedicated to this topic. In her intervention, the governor highlighted the importance of societal participation in the pursuit of a safer Guanajuato, stating that every person can contribute from their own position.

The proposed plan includes a multidisciplinary approach to prevention, involving various state departments such as the Secretariats of Security, Government, Education, Health, Economy, and Culture, as well as organizations like the State DIF and the Institute for Guanajuatecan Women. The State Attorney General will also be a permanent guest in this initiative.

The government strategy focuses on steering children and youth away from criminal environments through educational, cultural, and sports programs, aiming to tackle violence at its roots. However, in light of the historical problem of violence in Guanajuato, questions arise about the long-term effectiveness of these measures, generating debate about whether more immediate actions are needed to reduce crime rates.

In parallel with the prevention plan, the governor led the reinstatement of the Commission for Social Assistance and Family Strengthening, with the aim of improving support services for people in vulnerable situations. This commission will work collaboratively with governmental and civil society organizations to ensure quality aid with a focus on human rights and a gender perspective.
