In Mexico City, the cacomixtle is considered a species at risk. In addition to inhabiting Azcapotzalco, they can be found in urban areas of Puebla and Querétaro. Adapted to city life, they have been seen feeding on food scraps, including trash, sweets, and pet food.
According to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), this mammal weighs up to one and a half kilograms and stands 40 centimeters tall, with a tail that reaches half a meter, playing an important role in pest control. Its diet includes everything from eggs and fruits to mice, cockroaches, and beetles, thus contributing to ecological balance.
Cacomixtles are good climbers thanks to their tail, which provides stability. They live on average up to 7 years, and their name in Nahuatl, tlacomiztli, means half feline. In cities, they have found their ecological niche, becoming our urban neighbors.
The Azcapotzalco municipality has disseminated information to raise awareness among the population about the importance of coexisting with cacomixtles, as they do not pose risks to public health nor cause harm. Unfortunately, there have been reported cases of poisoning in the area, highlighting the need to protect these creatures.
It is crucial not to confuse cacomixtles with rodents, as being incorrectly identified as pests can lead to poisoning. Therefore, there is a call to avoid the use of poison, as it could affect other pets or even children. These nocturnal, solitary animals, smaller than a cat, are contributing to the balance and diversity of urban life.
In the event of spotting a cacomixtle, it is urged to respect it and not disturb it, thereby contributing to the preservation of this species in an increasingly intricate environment for wildlife.
