On the occasion of World Organ and Tissue Transplant Day, commemorated every February 27, the Chief of the Nephrology and Transplantation Division of the Specialty Hospital, Dr. Roberto Martínez de Pinillos, pointed out that the waiting list for patients needing a kidney transplant remains significant. He encouraged citizens to clearly express to their loved ones if they wish to be donors, highlighting the importance of this conversation to help others.
"I tell the population to say while they are alive if they want to be donors, discuss it with their loved ones, it is the best way to make clear how to help their fellow human beings," shared Dr. Martínez de Pinillos. He also mentioned that for the year 2025, there are plans to strengthen the transplant team at the hospital.
According to data provided by the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Jalisco, the kidney transplant program is the most demanded in the region. In 2024, 258 kidney transplants were performed, of which 211 were related living donations and 47 were cadaveric donations. To date, a total of 6,671 transplants have been historically performed at the Medical Specialty Unit (UMAE) Specialty Hospital.
In addition to kidney transplants, the hospital has carried out cornea transplants, liver transplants, hematopoietic stem cell transplants, heart transplants, and pancreas-kidney block transplants. During 2024, the Specialty Hospital received 6 multi-organ donations that allowed for the procurement of 12 kidneys for transplantation, making it a productive year in this area.
