Crisis of Missing Women in Oaxaca

Between February 14 and 28, according to the Missing Persons page of the Oaxaca Prosecutor's Office, the disappearance of nine women in the region has been reported, four of whom are minors. The missing women include Jacqueline Aileth Meza Cazares (23 years), Noemí Yamileth López Moratilla (28 years), Brenda Mariel Salas Moya (19 years), Jasibe Donaji Díaz Colmenares (29 years), among others. Four of these women are minors, including Renata Julián Pimentel (14 years), Alexa Jhovanna (14 years), Diana Yaneth Ayón Urbano (17 years), and María Fernanda Palomec Francisco (17 years).

Five of the nine missing women, including Jacqueline Aileth Meza Cazares, Noemí Yamileth López Moratilla, Brenda Mariel Salas Moya, Jasibe Donaji Díaz Colmenares, and Mayra Colón Silva, were last seen on the coast of Oaxaca, with no information on their whereabouts to date. Social media has been used as a means to disseminate photographs of the missing women in hopes of obtaining information leading to their location.

To illustrate the problems of disappearances in the region, the case of Jacqueline Aileth Meza Cazares, a 23-year-old woman, is significant. On the night of February 26, Jacqueline disappeared while dining at a restaurant in Zopolite, Oaxaca, her mother, Andrea Cázares García, reported via social media. The mother described Jacqueline as a brown-skinned woman, 1.60 meters tall, who was accompanied by a man before being taken by unknown individuals.

"Please, I ask for your help," Andrea Cázares pleaded, "she disappeared last night at a beach called Zipolite, she was taken and so far we know nothing." Jacqueline was described as wearing a short navy blue dress with flowers and glasses. The mother pointed out that at the time of her disappearance, Jacqueline left two children aged 5 and 3 waiting for her. Concern for her whereabouts grows amid an environment where multiple women continue to be unaccounted for in Oaxaca.
