International HPV Awareness Day

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection that most sexually active people will contract at some point in their lives. Often, this infection has no symptoms and clears up on its own within two years.

Some strains of HPV can lead to genital warts, while others may cause various complications, such as cervical cancer and other types of genital cancer. HPV is estimated to be the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease worldwide and increases the risk of cancer.

Although there is no specific treatment for HPV, there are medications to treat the effects that the virus may cause, such as genital warts. Prevention plays a crucial role in controlling this infection, highlighting the importance of vaccination and the use of condoms to reduce its spread.

In Mexico, the HPV vaccine is available, contributing to the prevention and control of the infection. The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated March 4th as the International HPV Awareness Day to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of this disease.

WHO and other health institutions promote the importance of knowing the available health services to prevent the transmission and consequences of HPV. It is essential to be aware of the risks associated with this infection, as some strains of HPV may lead to the formation of abnormal cells that can evolve into cancer if not treated in time.
