Suspension of the Dolphinarium at Hotel Barceló Riviera Maya

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection suspended the dolphinarium of the Barceló Riviera Maya Hotel for not having the authorization from Semarnat to conduct shows with dolphins. Although the hotel continues to operate normally, the dolphinarium will not be able to exhibit these animals due to the lack of an adequate protocol, putting the lives of the dolphins at risk, as in the case of the dolphin Mincho. The Attorney's office had been inspecting the site for over a month after a video was shared on social media showing a dolphin crashing against concrete while performing a stunt.

In statements, the Attorney for Environmental Protection, Mariana Boy, mentioned that the suspension is the first measure taken, as the investigations have not yet concluded. "This is the first measure we have applied to this establishment due to the findings of our inspection; the work we are doing has not concluded," she commented. Profepa is committed to ensuring dignified treatment for wildlife specimens.

As a consequence of this case, Profepa announced inspections in all dolphinariums in the country to guarantee the dignified treatment of animals in captivity.
