New Mandate for Passenger Transport Safety in Mexico

A new regulation requires passenger transport vehicles in Mexico to display clear markings for safety. The initiative aims to enhance security on highways, with a deadline set for May 8. Transport companies are cooperating to meet these new standards.

New Mandate for Passenger Transport Safety in Mexico

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) announced that it has established the obligation to mark and identify around 1 million 800 thousand units of federal freight transport that circulate on Mexican roads. This measure is framed in the concern to improve road safety in the country. According to what is stipulated in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF), vehicles must have at least four visible markings in specific places such as the service door, right rear window, rear part, and roof.

The marking process, which takes between two and three hours on average, is carried out with sustainable, water-based, non-polluting, and durable material. This initiative has received a positive response from leaders of chambers, organizations, and transporters since it was published in the DOF about a month ago.

One of the companies that has already begun marking its units is Ómnibus de México. Benjamín Galván Torres, the company's operations director, highlighted the importance of this measure to ensure safer traffic conditions. He pointed out that marking is essential, especially for new units, which must be marked from the factory before being incorporated into operational services.

The executive director of Supervision of the General Directorate of Federal Transport (DGAF), Paulino Herrera Manzano, explained that the objective of the marking is to facilitate the identification of vehicles through video surveillance, drones, or helicopters in case of emergencies or criminal incidents. In this way, it seeks to improve safety on roads and provide additional tools to authorities to monitor traffic.

The deadline to carry out the marking of the units is 90 days, according to the regulations published, and expires next May 8. The federal freight transport sector is working in coordination with the SICT to comply with this obligation in a timely manner. Transporters can use different methods to mark their vehicles, such as paints, templates, stickers, banners, or tarpaulins, as long as they ensure the visibility and legibility of the license plate numbers at all times.
