Good sleep offers numerous benefits for the mental and physical health of individuals. Sleeping adequately can help reduce the risks of suffering from diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, anxiety, and depression. According to psychologist Tomás Delfino Alcántara Ramírez from the Mental Health Coordination of IMSS, to achieve restorative sleep, it is important to rest in a quiet and noise-free environment, as well as to avoid the consumption of alcohol, coffee, or nicotine before sleeping.
Additionally, it is recommended not to use screens before going to bed and to maintain a regular sleep schedule. On the occasion of World Sleep Day, Dr. Alcántara emphasized the importance of dedicating a third of life to rest, highlighting the relevance of having a room with the appropriate temperature and reducing stress. Limiting the use of devices such as cell phones, tablets, and televisions is key, as the light they emit can disrupt sleep.
Restorative sleep contributes to the development of cognitive functions such as memory and learning, thereby improving overall mental and physical health. In case of difficulties sleeping, it is advisable to consult a doctor, who can prescribe medications or suggest non-drug treatments, such as psychoeducation to maintain good sleep hygiene and improve eating habits.
