According to the National Survey on Health and Nutrition, in Mexico nearly half of the adult population suffers from some sleep disorder, such as snoring or insomnia. This can lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and depression. In commemoration of International Sleep Day, the World Health Organization indicates that adults should sleep at least seven hours, but warns that one in four children in Mexico has difficulty falling asleep.
Joan Vicente Morató, general director of Hästens Mexico, emphasizes that sleeping at least eight hours allows for the restoration of the body and brain to face a new day. On the other hand, lack of sleep can generate anxiety, decreased learning ability, and irritability in people, according to Dr. Jessica González, head of Health Services at La Salle University.
Experts point out that snoring is not normal and can be an indicator of respiratory problems, such as sleep apnea, which interrupts breathing during the night and affects sleep quality. In cases of persistent snoring, it is crucial to seek medical attention to address this disorder before it worsens.
Regarding the amount of sleep, Dr. González mentions that oversleeping is not bad as long as it does not interfere with daily routine and is restorative. However, she warns about narcolepsy, a sleep disease that causes extreme daytime sleepiness. Excessive sleep can also affect a person's mood, concentration, and eating habits.
As for young people, the expert debunks the belief that they are more productive at night. Due to the use of screen devices and exposure to social media, sleep cycles can be disrupted, making rest less effective. To improve sleep quality, it is recommended to avoid the consumption of stimulating drinks, such as coffee, and limit the use of electronic devices before going to bed.
In summary, adequate rest is essential for physical and mental health. Joan Vicente Morató highlights the importance of considering factors such as mattress quality, as it can directly influence sleep quality and, in the long term, overall health.
