Voice Cloning Fraud Increases in Mexico

Cybercriminals are using artificial intelligence to clone voices and perpetrate frauds, deceiving victims' family or friends into requesting money under false pretenses, such as emergencies, thefts, or kidnappings. A recent survey conducted by a technology security company revealed that 1 in 10 people has received a message with an AI-cloned voice, and 77% of those affected have been victims of fraud.

Voice recordings are frequently obtained from videos and audios shared on social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok. Cybercriminals create conversations and phrases to deceive family, friends, or acquaintances of the victim. In response to this situation, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) through the General Directorate of Service Management, Cybersecurity, and Technological Development recommends a series of preventive measures.

To reduce the risk of falling into this type of scam, it is advised to stay calm and not act impulsively in response to urgent money requests. It is important to verify the identity of the person through another means of communication and to share information about such frauds with family and friends. Activating two-step verification and establishing a keyword with close individuals are also recommended measures. It is advised to avoid answering calls or messages from unknown numbers, as well as not sharing personal information without confirmation and protecting voice privacy by avoiding uploading recordings to social media or public platforms.

The improper use of artificial intelligence to commit crimes is a growing threat in the digital realm. Applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and voice message exchanges on digital platforms have facilitated communication but also opened the door to new types of frauds. Cybercriminals use AI to replicate voices with high precision, imitating tone, intonation, and pronunciation to deceive their victims.

Prevention and awareness are key to staying protected against these types of frauds. The SSPC issues recommendations to avoid becoming a victim of these crimes and warns about the risk of voice cloning through AI.
