Neutral Climate Phase Expected Until 2025

Climate conditions in Mexico and the US are predicted to stabilize between April and September 2025, with experts warning of possible severe weather despite the absence of La Niña and El Niño.

Neutral Climate Phase Expected Until 2025

According to the report from the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), it is expected that for several months there will be no influence of La Niña or El Niño on the weather patterns of the region. This neutral phase is expected to last from April to August or September 2025, bringing more stable weather without extreme temperatures.

Specialists warn that, despite the absence of these phenomena, it does not mean the elimination of adverse weather events. Heat will continue to prevail in spring, and summer could bring heavy rains and cold fronts, with the possibility of severe storms in much of the national territory.

Forecasts indicate that the probability of the appearance of El Niño in 2025 is low, between 10% and 15%. The CPC mentioned that the La Niña phenomenon has been weakening since March and will come to an end in April, paving the way for a neutral climatic phase in Mexico and the United States. On the other hand, it is suggested that La Niña could regain intensity in the last months of the year.

In previous years, La Niña has caused a decrease in rainfall in central and southern Mexico, worsening droughts, and an increase in precipitation in the north, favoring storms and flooding. Despite the weakening of the phenomenon, experts are advised to monitor climatic conditions for possible changes in the coming months.

The La Niña phenomenon, as explained by the National Institute of Meteorology and Statistics (INMET), is an oceanic phenomenon characterized by the cooling of surface waters in the central and eastern part of the equatorial Pacific, and by changes in tropical atmospheric circulation. This impacts temperature and precipitation regimes in various parts of the globe, including South America.
