In Mexico, a measure has been established to regulate the preparation, distribution, and sale of food and beverages in schools of the National Educational System. The agreement published in the Official Journal of the Federation aims to promote healthy lifestyle habits in students' eating, as part of the "Healthy Life, Live Happy" program of the Ministry of Public Education.
Starting from March 29, 2025, the sale of junk food will be prohibited at all educational levels, including basic, upper secondary, vocational training, and higher education. All food and beverages in schools must meet requirements such as being economically accessible, having a low environmental impact, being natural, fresh, seasonal, and containing locally or regionally produced ingredients.
Foods and beverages with low nutritional value will be prohibited, such as those with added sugars, fats, salt, sweeteners, additives, or harmful ingredients for health. The sale of soft drinks, potato chips, industrial desserts, cookies, bakery products made with refined flours, sugary juices, high sugar cereals, candies, fried foods, among others, will be restricted.
The objective of this measure is to eliminate unhealthy foods and promote balanced eating among students. It seeks to reduce health issues such as obesity by fostering healthier eating habits. This initiative aims to improve the health of the school community in Mexico and provide more appropriate food options for students.
