Mexico's Embrace for Migrants: A Call to Action

Mexico is opening its arms to migrants with the 'Mexico Te Abraza' strategy, addressing urgent needs for integration, safety, and dignity in response to the ongoing migration crisis.

Mexico's Embrace for Migrants: A Call to Action

The initiative 'Mexico Embraces You' seeks to guarantee the human right to social security and the recognition of the cultural, economic, and labor contributions of people in situations of mobility. In this context, a series of initiatives have emerged in Latin America to support those who are forced to leave their lands in search of a dignified life.

A 3.6-meter tall puppet, named Amal, toured 15 countries representing a refugee girl on a mission of solidarity. Her journey ended in Mexico in December 2023. The deportation policy of the Donald Trump administration has created an urgent challenge for Latin American countries: to develop effective repatriation plans that welcome their nationals with dignity.

In light of this situation, various international, governmental, and civil society organizations have come together to address the humanitarian needs of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. In this context, the Inter-American Conference on Social Security will host the International Forum on Human Mobility and Social Security on March 19 and 20.

The goal is to create a space for collaborative reflection to identify actions and policies that ensure the safety of people in situations of mobility. The reconstruction of the dreams of those returning to their countries with access to social programs, employment, and security is promoted. The importance of welcoming these individuals in a dignified and warm manner is emphasized.

In the region, there is a push to adopt comprehensive and coordinated strategies to respond to the needs of migrants and refugees, providing effective support and prioritizing their well-being. Human mobility is a phenomenon that requires the solidarity and commitment of all involved actors.

The return of those who were forced to leave their homes should not just be an act of coming back, but a welcome that offers them opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity. It is essential to provide social protection to these individuals in their pursuit of a better future outside their places of origin, recognizing their dreams and aspirations.
