Donald Trump had threatened Mexico at the start of his term to intensify border controls and reduce the flow of fentanyl, warning of a 25 percent tariff otherwise. Currently, there has been a 97 percent reduction in illegal crossings and about 9 thousand kilos in fentanyl seizures compared to three months ago.
In addition to fentanyl, it is estimated that the trafficking of methamphetamines and heroin has also decreased by 45 percent. The joint efforts between Mexico and the United States continue to contain fentanyl trafficking.
In a recent statement, the National Defense Secretariat of Mexico reported that Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, the head of Defense, held a video call with Gregory M. Guillot, the commander of the United States Northern Command, where the efforts of both nations in reducing illegal crossings and securing illicit drugs were acknowledged.
