The Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMEX) reported that on April 18, 2025, at 13:18:33 hours, an earthquake was detected off the coast of Oaxaca, 40 km west of Pinotepa Nacional. Despite this seismic event, the seismic alert was not activated in Mexico City, as the energy estimation in the first seconds of the event did not reach the necessary level to issue an alarm.
"No seismic alert was warranted because the energy estimation in the first seconds did not exceed the pre-established levels," detailed the Mexican Seismic Alert System in an official statement.
During the afternoon of the same day, two earthquakes of mild to moderate intensity were recorded, which was a positive outcome for residents of the areas near the epicenter. According to SkyAlert, the reported intensity corresponded to the epicenter and not to the location of those who felt it.
Users on social media mentioned that the earthquake was felt in some areas of Mexico City, although they did not specify which of the two earthquakes was responsible for this. Some described the sensation as similar to the passage of heavy vehicles.
Despite the movement being felt in some regions, no material damage or injuries have been reported so far. SkyAlert confirmed the event, categorizing it as "mild" at 4.9 degrees on the Richter scale in the Ometepec area, Guerrero, near the epicenter.
The Civil Protection of the involved states has maintained preventive monitoring, although indications suggest that it was a lower magnitude event with no serious consequences so far.
