Rise of STIs in Latin America: Experts Call to Prioritize Access to Preventive Supplies

On the eve of International Condom Day, experts warn of the critical erosion of global HIV and STI prevention systems. In Mexico, bureaucratic failures have led to a shortage of key protective supplies like condoms and lubricants, worsening the issues of unequal access and social stigma.

In the lead-up to International Condom Day, observed on February 13th, experts are emphasizing the need to normalize self-care in recreational spaces to foster collective responsibility. The prevention landscape for HIV and other STIs in Latin America and the Caribbean is showing critical signs of erosion. According to UNAIDS data, global condom procurement saw a reduction of approximately 30% between 2016 and 2022. This trend coincides with a sustained increase in sexually transmitted infections. In Mexico, the situation has been worsened by internal management factors. Despite projections from the National Center for HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Prevention and Control (CENSIDA) for lubricant procurement for the 2025-2026 biennium, the nullification of the public tender has resulted in a complete absence of this supply in state programs. José Antonio Matus, Advocacy Coordinator for AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Mexico, noted that during the previous period, the distribution of condoms was interrupted in various federal entities due to bureaucratic procedures. Dr. Patricia Campos, Director of the AHF Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, warned that the resurgence of infections like syphilis is a clear indicator of failures in prevention systems. Campos underscored that while barrier methods remain clinically effective, unequal access and social stigma persist as insurmountable barriers for large segments of the population. Under the slogan 'Just Use It!', AHF Mexico has activated a series of simultaneous interventions for February 13th. These actions seek to decentralize information and bring it to everyday environments.
