Unstable Weather in Mexico: Alerts for Rain, Thunderstorms, and Hail

On Wednesday, weather conditions in much of Mexico show an unstable atmospheric behavior, with rain, lightning, wind gusts, and possible hail in several regions of the country. Meteorological authorities have issued alerts and recommendations for the public to stay informed and take precautions against possible weather phenomena. What is causing the adverse weather? According to forecasts, several atmospheric systems are influencing the country's climate: • A trough in the mid and high levels of the atmosphere and channels of low pressure favor instability over the northeast, center, and south of the country. • The subtropical jet stream increases humidity and interaction between systems, which favors the formation of storms. • In the north, a dry line combined with the subtropical jet stream can trigger strong wind gusts. These factors will cause rain and storms to not only occur in isolation but also with variable intensity depending on the region. States with rain, hail, and thunderstorms According to forecasts, the regions that could experience more severe conditions on Wednesday include: Intense rain and hail • Chiapas and Tabasco: very heavy local rains, accompanied by electrical activity and possible hail. • Oaxaca, Veracruz, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo: heavy rains to showers with a probability of thunderstorms. Moderate rain and showers • Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Hidalgo, Puebla, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Guerrero, and Mexico City: intervals of showers with a chance of electrical discharges. Isolated rain • Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, Querétaro, and other areas in the north and center: probabilities of scattered rains during the day. In mountainous areas of states like Chihuahua, Durango, and the center of the country, morning frosts could also be recorded, which reflects the mix of winter conditions with the transition to the rainy season. What about in Mexico City? In the country's capital, a day with intervals of showers and a chance of rain accompanied by lightning is expected, especially in the afternoon, due to atmospheric instability.
