Jalisco Calls for Reinforced Scorpion Prevention Measures

The Jalisco Health Secretariat is urging residents to take extra precautions due to an increase in scorpion stings during the hot season. Authorities have warned of a high concentration of these arachnids in Tomatlán, Mezquitic, and La Huerta and recommended preventive measures, especially for vulnerable groups.

Jalisco Calls for Reinforced Scorpion Prevention Measures

The Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) called on the population to reinforce prevention measures due to the presence of scorpions during the hot season and prior to the rainy season. The agency reported that these preventive measures aim to reduce risks in different regions of the state, where environmental conditions favor the appearance of these arachnids.

According to the epidemiological surveillance system, 6,900 cases of scorpion stings have been registered in the entity so far in 2026. They also confirmed that the age group of 25 to 44 years shows the highest incidence. The cases are mainly concentrated in municipalities such as Tomatlán, Mezquitic, and La Huerta.

Authorities pointed out that the most vulnerable groups are children under five years old, people over 65 years old, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases.

In case of a sting, the SSJ recommends going immediately to a health unit and avoiding self-medication or the use of home remedies. The OPD Servicios de Salud Jalisco has fabotherapeutic antivenom available in its medical units, which is applied free of charge.

«It is important that the population remains attentive and adopts preventive measures, especially in the most affected Health Regions. Likewise, it is recommended to maintain surveillance on minors and older adults, who may have greater vulnerability to a sting and the effects of the venom,» stated Alejandra Cornejo Magdaleno, State Coordinator of the Arthropod Poisoning Prevention and Control Program of the OPD Servicios de Salud Jalisco.

Main preventive measures in homes against stings:

Shake clothes, shoes, and bedding before using them. Install mosquito nets and dust covers on doors and windows. Seal cracks in walls and floors. Keep the spaces clean.

Similarly, it is recommended to avoid the accumulation of materials such as wood, bricks, or debris, as they can serve as a refuge for scorpions. The SSJ indicated that most stings occur inside the home, mainly in bedrooms and at night.
