The Secretary of the Environment identified 70 landfills in the state that operate without complying with current regulations, so it will work together with the new municipal authorities to ensure that these sites meet safety and environmental efficiency criteria.
The study conducted by the agency covered 162 municipalities and revealed that the current landfills do not meet the needs of the population nor comply with the required environmental standards. Additionally, a call was made to citizens to promote the circular economy, a key strategy to reduce waste generation and move towards more sustainable management.
The main objective, the agency noted, is to collaborate with the municipalities in the construction of new landfills to address the capacity deficit, as is the case in the municipalities of the Cholula and Tehuacán region. The Secretary emphasized that this diagnosis will be delivered as a significant advance for the incoming administration, led by Alejandro Armenta, with whom a meeting has already been held to explain the situation of the 12 regional landfills and the 70 sites that do not comply with the regulations.
