Child Hydration Crisis in Mexico

Child Hydration Crisis in Mexico

Eight out of ten girls, boys, and adolescents do not have adequate hydration at home or at school. The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) has decided to resume the school water fountain program to try to reverse this trend. Pediatric Internal Medicine specialist, Arturo Perea, warns that a poorly hydrated child can develop kidney, liver, and diabetes problems in adulthood. Perea points out that instilling the habit of consuming natural water may require up to an entire generation to become a healthy custom in society.

The president of the Mexican Pediatric Association, Manuel Correa, emphasizes the importance of children consuming natural water from an early age, along with breast milk. During the growth stage, a daily consumption of one liter of water is recommended for children up to six years old, and two liters for children aged ten years and older. These recommendations were emphasized during the presentation of the campaign "Small Sips, Big Benefits" promoted by the company Bebbia, to encourage the consumption of natural water among the child and adolescent population in Mexico.

As part of this initiative, various activities will be carried out to raise awareness about the importance of children's hydration with quality water. Informational events with doctors and specialists are planned in several cities across the country to educate about the benefits of adequate hydration for children's health. Educational materials will also be distributed to parents and pediatricians to promote healthy habits from an early age.

A study in Latin America on fluid intake in children and adolescents reveals that only 28% of them consume enough water, and less than 31% obtain it from a purified source. Additionally, more than 60% of drinking water in Mexico does not meet quality standards, highlighting the importance of purification solutions to ensure safe water, especially for minors. Experts emphasize that adequate hydration improves concentration, learning, and children's mood, preventing health issues such as fatigue, irritability, and lack of attention.
