The coordinator of the Parliamentary Group of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) in the LXII Legislature of the State of Mexico, José Alberto Couttolenc Buentello, highlighted the importance of improving the management of urban solid waste in the entity and the Megalopolis. Only 10% of the waste is recycled, while the remaining 90% is disposed of in open air, generating sources of infection.
At the forum "Comprehensive Management of Urban Solid Waste" organized by the environmentalist faction, Couttolenc Buentello emphasized the need to establish a Special Commission for the comprehensive management of waste. Additionally, it was proposed to analyze the problem of single-use plastics and promote technologies to convert waste into energy.
During the event, it was also emphasized the importance of reducing the amount of waste to generate clean energy and decrease pollution, conserve natural resources, and contribute to a more sustainable future. Proper separation of waste was highlighted as key to achieving a sustainable future.
Couttolenc Buentello mentioned that in the State of Mexico, there are 187 sanitary landfills and 2,500 open-air dumps, which evidences a lag in waste management. It is estimated that the pollution generated by waste accounts for 1.3% of the national GDP, placing the state as one of the main generators at the national level.
Each inhabitant produces around 1.1 kilograms of waste per day, which translates to about 18 thousand tons daily. However, only 13% of this waste is recycled. In response to this problem, initiatives will be presented through the environmentalist faction to promote the use of technology and the creation of integrated waste centers.
