Former boxer Israel Vázquez is battling cancer, specifically a stage 4 sarcoma, which has given him a life expectancy of six months according to a doctor. Despite feeling stable, he has experienced significant weight loss, around 18 kilograms.
Last June, Vázquez began to experience intense pain in his left leg that he initially believed was caused by sclerosis. After visiting a rheumatologist in Mexico City, the diagnosis he received was devastating. His wife Laura shared that his condition had drastically worsened in a short time, severely affecting his quality of life.
In addition to the intense pain in his legs, Vázquez has suffered other symptoms such as weight loss, difficulty breathing, swelling, and weakness in his legs. This type of cancer, sarcoma, affects both bones and soft tissues, with around 70 different types. Symptoms can manifest as bone pain, sudden fractures, abdominal pain, and weight loss.
Stage 4 sarcoma is characterized by having spread to other parts of the body, with little chance of healing. Israel Vázquez, known as 'El Magnífico', has faced various health problems since his retirement in 2010, including the loss of an eye due to medical negligence after a fight with Rafael Márquez, and more recently, the diagnosis of systemic sclerosis and now cancer.
His wife, Laura Vázquez, has shared how Israel's health condition has radically changed their way of life, while the World Boxing Council has launched a campaign to help raise funds to support the former boxer's medical treatment. This campaign has managed to raise a significant amount.
Despite the difficult health challenges he has faced, Israel Vázquez maintains a brave and determined attitude. In a recent interview, the boxer expressed his love for the sport and his gratitude for everything it has given him over the years.
