A new scandal in the field of cosmetic surgery in Mexico has come to light with accusations against Doctor Gamaliel Valdés Román, nicknamed "Doctor Gama" or "The surgeon of the stars", for alleged medical negligence in the procedures performed. Victims of these disastrous treatments claim that when attempting to confront the doctor about the results, he threatened them with a lawsuit if they spoke ill of him or his clinics.
Journalist Carlos Jiménez shared testimonies from victims who, after undergoing cosmetic surgeries with Valdés Román, experienced serious complications that put their lives at risk. In 2022, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) issued an alert due to irregularities in the chain of aesthetic clinics DG Aesthetics & MedSpa, owned by the doctor.
The "surgeon of the stars" attracted his victims with promotions significantly below the average cost of cosmetic surgeries in the country, offering procedures at very low prices for their complexity. One victim paid 92 thousand pesos for liposuction and is now fighting for her life after developing a severe skin lesion due to the disastrous results. This patient received a partial refund of 30 thousand pesos and was forced to sign a contract not to speak ill of the doctor or the clinic.
The lack of regulation and control by health authorities in Mexico allows doctors without the proper permits or experience to offer services that endanger the health and lives of patients. Cofepris issued warnings about the clinics of the "Surgeon of the stars" in 2022, revealing the dangers of the lack of regulation in cosmetic surgery. Other victims have had similar experiences, facing serious complications that have brought them to the brink of death.
