The Return of Trump and Its Global Implications

Trump's return to the White House marks a danger for global democracy, highlighting the rise of national populism and its implications in Mexico.

The Return of Trump and Its Global Implications

Trump's return to the presidency of the United States marks a political triumph that raises concerns not only at the national level but also globally. His return to power, accompanied by the richest men on the planet and owners of major social media platforms, poses a challenge to democracy worldwide.

During his previous term, Trump promoted a national populism that undermined democratic foundations and tested institutions by urging his followers to storm the Capitol in an attempt to remain in power. Now, his return creates a favorable environment for populists and autocrats globally, threatening values such as democracy, migrant rights, and pluralism in societies.

In the case of Mexico, which has also seen a similar process to the United States since 2018 with the rise of “elobradorato” to power, it faces significant challenges. The current government shows weaknesses against Trump’s threats, such as mass deportations, tariffs on Mexican products, and statements against drug cartels. The lack of recognition of social plurality and the crisis of party opposition put the government in a vulnerable position.

Furthermore, the current government deals with fractured finances, a stagnant economy, high levels of violence and insecurity, and a lack of a clear strategy in the face of external threats. The call for “national unity” is tarnished by the opposition’s lack of credibility and the absence of a real debate on national issues.

Trump's return to power is accompanied by an expansionist narrative and a rethinking of geopolitics to position the United States as a global leader. Globally, uncertainty and dangers increase with this new scenario.

In this context, it remains to be seen whether Mexican authoritarian populism can confront Trumpism and protect the country's interests, or if it will align with the interests of the empire. The threat is real, and the Mexican government faces the challenge of responding effectively to the new era ahead.
