According to Dr. José Ignacio Martínez Cortés, coordinator of the Laboratory of Analysis in Commerce, Economy, and Business (LACEN) at UNAM, Mexico lacks a state policy regarding the White House. In an interview with Aristegui en Vivo, Martínez Cortés compared Donald Trump's tariff threats against Mexico with those made before his inauguration in 2017.
"We have seen this movie before, and we are making a mistake again because we have not designed a state policy towards the White House. All dependencies, all federal government secretariats must be aligned regarding the relationship with the U.S. government," said the academic.
Martínez Cortés pointed out the lack of an articulated strategy in trade, mentioning internal conflicts in the responsible secretariats and the tense relationship with Altagracia Gómez, coordinator of the Economic Development Advisory Council of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Regarding the relationship with the United States, the academic considers that Mexico reacts without a comprehensive vision that defends national interests and sovereignty, generating uncertainty currently. He emphasized the lack of a policy or programs concerning what Trump has been warning about for two years.
Martínez Cortés stressed that at the end of the trade agreement with the United States and Canada (T-MEC) in 2036, the country will again face uncertainty. He raised the question of how it will be reviewed or renegotiated in 2026 and insisted on the need for a long-term state policy concerning the U.S. government.
In summary, Martínez considers it essential that the state policy towards the U.S. government takes into account the years to come.
