During a press conference, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasized the sovereignty and independence of her country in the face of the political actions of the United States government. Specifically, she mentioned Trump's executive orders, such as the declaration of emergency at the southern border and the 'remain in Mexico' policy for asylum seekers, measures already faced in the past by her government.
Sheinbaum called for calm after Donald Trump's return to the presidency of the U.S., urging an evaluation of the president's decrees beyond his statements and reaffirming Mexico's stance of not accepting any intervention in its territory. She highlighted the willingness to dialogue with the U.S. under the principle of the country's independence and emphasized that the region will continue to be known as the Gulf of Mexico.
Regarding possible threats of tariffs and trade measures, Sheinbaum indicated that no immediate actions are expected, as the agreement calls for a review of the North American treaty in 2026, and any retaliation will depend on discrepancies in drug or migration issues. Additionally, she reaffirmed her government's humanitarian stance in light of the migration situation at the border and committed to facilitating repatriations to the countries of origin.
In relation to Trump's intention to classify drug cartels as 'terrorist organizations', Sheinbaum assured that she will always defend Mexico above all and reiterated the commitment to defending national interests before the international community.
In a critical tone, the president pointed out Trump's symbolic measure of naming the Gulf of Mexico as 'Gulf of America' on the U.S. continental shelf, reaffirming Mexico's independence and sovereignty as fundamental principles.
